Guide to Extractions

A marijuana concentrate is a highly-potent concentrated THC mass which can be extracted from a high volume of plants using chemical solvents or other more natural methods. Solvents include butane and alcohol, whereas the latter includes pressure, water and/or heat. Not to be confused with infusions.

The end-product will appear differently by textures based on the method of extraction and quality of materials used in the process.

Natural Extraction Methods

The cleanest of all extractions are produced using natural forms, leaving only the purest products for consumption.

1. Extraction by Water

Dry or fresh-frozen flowers are mixed with ice, shaken to break off the trichomes then filtered through multiple screens.

Hash

THC Content: 50-80%
Consistency: Moldable dark amalgamations of trichomes
Method: dry or fresh-frozen flowers mixed with ice, shaken to break off the trichomes then filtered through multiple screens to form a gooey paste. Once dried, what is leftover is hash.
How to Smoke: edible, twaxing joint

Rick Simpson Oil (RSO)

THC Content: 60-90%
Consistency: gooey oil
Method: Full spectrum plant extract of potent cannabis where plant material is stirred and broken down into water or butane or alcohol, then liquid is drained. The remainder is decaboxylated at a temperature of 100-110 degrees celcius, making the solvent gradually evaporate also leaving pure medicinal oil.
How To: orally administered under the tongue, applied topically directly to the skin

2. Extraction by heat and pressure

Rosin

THC Content: 60-90%
Newest and hottest extract popular due to it's easy production
Extracted Using: pressing trim and flowers with heat
How to Smoke: twaxing joint

3. EXTRACTION BY CO2 (Carbon Dioxide)

Deemed as the "healthiest" of all extraction methods, CO2 enables scientists to isolate various terpenes and cannabinoids from the plant itself. Carbon dioxide is manipulated at a certain temperature to turn from gas to liquid, which is what "supercritical" stands for. Flowers are flushed with carbon dioxide to extracts medicinal properties, which are picked up and turned into a liquid.

Supercritical CO2 Oil

Non-flammable and contains zero chemical solvents
THC Content: 50-75%
Consistency: loose, orange-tinted
Extracted Using: pressure
How to Smoke: non-flammble

Solvent-Extraction Methods

4. Extraction by butane

When it comes to butane, it is washed over dry flower and then burnt off to leave highest amounts of THC and flavourful terpenes in the finished product. The only butane extraction that uses fresh-frozen flowers is live resin, whereas everything else comes from dry buds.

Hash Oil

THC Content: 50-75%
Consistency: sand
Method: butane, alcohol

Shatter

THC Content: as high as 60-90%
Consistency: transparent, lightly-coloured, glass-like
Extracted Using: dry flowers, blasted with butane and no agitation during extraction, which changes consistency from translucent to opaque
How To: smokable, heat well

Sap

THC Content: as high as 60-90%
Consistency: sticky, pliable form of shatter
How to Smoke: twaxing joint

Honeycomb

THC Content: as high as 60-90%
Consistency: grainy, easy to melt
Extracted Using: dry ice
How to Smoke: twax, vape, dab

Budder

THC Content: as high as 60-90%
Consistency: opaque peanut butter
Method: butane (or CO2), gently whipped during or after extraction process, creating fluffy varieties

Crumble

THC Content: as high as 60-90%
Consistency: grainy, easy to melt
Method: similar to budder, lower heat blasted slower which preserves terpenes creating moist consistency
How to Smoke: twaxing joint

Wax

THC Content: as high as 60-90%
Consistency: opaque beeswax, earwax
Extracted Using: butane
How to Smoke: rig

Live Resin

THC Content: as high as 60-90%
Consistency: transparent, lightly-coloured, glass-like
Extracted Using: fresh-frozen flowers, butane
How To Use: smokable, heat well

Sauce

Consistency: grainy, easy to melt
Extracted Using: aged live resin, where crystals produced during curation are pushed into the secreted liquid to form sauce
How to Smoke: twaxing joint

5. Extraction by Alcohol

Plants are soaked in ethanol to dissolve the active terpenes and cannabinoids. However, they alcohol does pick up aome undesirable plant matter in the form of chloropyll. This retention of

Tincture

THC Content: as high as 95%
Consistency: transparent, lightly-coloured, glass-like
Method: Decarboxylated cannabis is soaked in alcohol to draw out medicinal properties, thereafter added to an oil or alcohol base.
s How To Use: orally

Distillate

THC Content: as high as 95%
Consistency: transparent, lightly-coloured, glass-like
Method: Made through molecular distillation where butane hash oil is refined with alcohol then chilled at extreme temperatures then distilled to concentrate further.
How To Use: smokable, heat well

Terp Sauce

Consistency: grainy, easy to melt
Extracted Using: Because terpenes are lost during distillation, this THC distillate has extracted terpenes added after the distillation process.
How to Smoke: twaxing joint
